| dc.description.abstractotrodioma | This paper describes a new approach for investigating drinking behaviour using an ‘informant’ method and explains how this was carried out in Mexico, Honduras and Canada. The use of this method involves gathering data from groups of informants who are briefed about questions on drinking within their occupational groups. They did not report on their own drinking, nor did they discuss ‘drinking in general’ or drinking among groups other than their own. Data from each group were recorded by an elected chairman who also acted as the principal informant. The questionnaire was adapted to make it appropriate for the three countries and combined questions on drinking behaviour, attitudes towards drunkenness and the need for facilities to treat alcohol problems. The results indicate that this type of study can produce valid results and is infinitely more economical than standard household surveys. Nevertheless in spite of clear advantages there are some problems, for example dedicated and interested investigators are essential. The authors suggest that the informant method may prove useful in the study of a variety of social and health problems. | es_ES |
