dc.description.abstractotrodiomaEthnopharmacologicalrelevance:Turneradiffusa Wild hasbeenusedinfolkmedicinebyitsaphrodisiac and ranquilizingproperties.Previouslyweexperimentallyshowedtheaphrodisiaceffectofa chemicallycharacterizedaqueousextractof Turnera diffusa in malerats.However,themechanismof action underlyingsucheffectshasnotbeenstudied. Study aims: As artofoursystematicstudiesofpharmacologicalpropertiesof Turneradiffusa, weaimed to analyzewhethertheincreasedsexualmotivationandtheaugmentedsexualperformanceofsexually sluggish (SL)maleratstreatedwith Turnera diffusa involvestheNOpathway.Additionallyweanalyzed whethersucheffectswereexertedatthelevelofthebrainorthespinalcord.Finally,anxietylevelsand ambulatoryactivitywerealsoevaluated. Material andmethods:Turneradiffusa (10–40 mg/kg)andsildenafilcitrate(10mg/kg)withorwithouta nonspecificinhibitorofNOsynthase,No-nitro-L-argininemethylesther(L-NAME, 12.5mg/kg)were evaluatedinSLrats,inastandardsexualbehaviortestandinthefictiveejaculationmodelinspinal cord transectedandurethane-anaesthetizedSLrats.Anxietylevelsorambulationwereassessedinthe buryingbehaviorandopen-fieldtests. Results:Turneradiffusa and sildenafil(bothat10mg/kg)facilitatedexpressionofmalesexualbehavior by shorteningmainlyejaculationlatency.Treatmentsalsofacilitatedthenumberofdischargesinthe ejaculatorymotorpatternaswellasthenumberofejaculatorymotorpatternsanditsassociatedpenile erections. L-NAMEpreventedthepro-sexualeffectsoftreatmentsonbothexperimentalmodels. Besides,theextractof Turneradiffusa (10 mg/kg)producedananxiolytic-likeeffectinmalerats withoutaffectingambulation. Conclusions: Findingsfromthepresentworksupportthenotionthatpro-sexualeffectoftheaqueous extractof Turnera diffusa in ratsinvolvestheparticipationofNOpathway,mainlyatcentrallevel.The anxiolytic-likeeffectof Turneradiffusa is anadvantagetoitsuseforimprovingsexualperformance.es_ES
