| es_ES |

dc.description.abstractotrodioma | There is a dearth of information about the ways in which Mexican men may exert their paternity role. Some studies conducted in Mexico (Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Georgrafía e Informática, 1997) report that fathers are absent not only physically (as a result of death, divorce, or separation) but also functionally since they often leave a number of family-related responsibilities, such as child rearing, to women. In addition, there are little data available on fathers' involvement in the provision of health care services to their offspring; even less is known about fathers' participation in the care provided to sons involved in substance abuse recovery programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of the father's role in families affected by a son's substance abuse, and the way those fathers responded to their sons' substance use. Sixteen in-depth, semi-structured interviews were carried out with male heads of households to examine: (a) the substance use history of the son, (b) the stress that such abuse produced within the nuclear family, and (c) the ways in which family members coped with the son's substance abuse. The ‘grounded theory’ approach was used to analyze these interviews. Fathers who assumed an atypical paternal role in Mexican culture, that is, assertively exercising the responsibility of seeking help for their sons and accompanying them to treatment, were found to be more successful in having their sons enroll in and successfully complete substance abuse recovery programs. These atypical fathers were also found to have responded to evidence of their sons' substance abuse in much the same way as their sons' mothers; frustration, impotence, guilt, and fear were among the emotions most commonly shared. | es_ES |
