dc.description.abstractotrodioma | Anderson (1984, 1998) has repeatedly pointed out that behavioral studies of nonhuman primates, mostly Anthro- poids, are biased towards daytime, yielding incomplete pictures of 24-hour activity patterns of this suborder.Anderson’s remarks are of interest in understanding par-ticular ecological and psychophysiological patterns un-derlying nighttime behavioral adaptations. The American Journal of Primatology (Raleigh, 1998) devoted an entireissue to nesting and resting as a review of this particular research domain and to draw attention to one of the mostneglected areas of primate behavioral ecology (Fruth &McGrew, 1998). Yet, upon reading the five seminal pa- pers and browsing through the references, one finds thatwhile nest-building and site-choosing received a lot of attention, little is known about the nocturnal behavior of primates. Only Anderson (1998) addresses such topics as presleep behaviors and nighttime activity. Recording behavioral activity in the dark, in the wild, of animalswho mostly prefer high places, such as branches and tree-holes, to spend the night is a dismaying challenge (Ander-son, 1998). Yet a bit of anthropocentric bias, towardsassuming that primates might sleep all throughout thenight just as so many humans do, is suspected also to permeate this kind of research | es_ES |
