The hypnotic effect of 4 benzodiazepines (alprazolam, .25 mg ; diazepam 5 mg; ketazolam, 30 mg, and lorazepam, 1 mg) and one placebo ware tested with single doses given 1 hr before the applications of 2 methods: First, polygraphic and behavioral study of wakefulness, sleepiness, and sleep states, and the second, the touch discrimination subtest of Halstead-Reitan neuropsychological test. Eleven volunteer subjects were studied in a crossed double-blind and randomized, analyzing the reaction time, time estimate, failure responses, and predictive responses. A significant increase (p <0.001) of the reaction time and estimate was seen (p<0.002) with the 4 benzodiazepines compared with placebo. The increase of reaction time was accompanied by an increase of failure responses. The best fitting correlation curve between the reaction time and time estime was exponential (r=0.51; n=36; p<0.01). With Halstead-Reitan neuropsychological test no significant alterations were seen, but diazepam produced the greatest impairment and ketazolam the least. At the doses used, the drug with the highest hypnotic action was alprazolam, followed by lorazepam and diazepam. Ketazolam showed an earlier but less-lasting effect.es_ES
