The Standard Psychiatric Interview (SPI) was administered to 94 elderly patients in a hospital's general practice study in Mexico City. An analysis comparing the case definition criteria established in the SPI with the levels of definition proposed by Wing is made. The importance of cognitive disorders as indicators of ‘caseness’ is evaluated. In the results, affective symptoms are found to be more specific of ‘caseness’ than cognitive disorders. The latter appeared conjointly with the affective symptoms, lacking therefore of specific weight indicators. The reliability and validity of the SPI for epidemiological surveys in the elderly is demonstrated.es_ES
